Assuming Eric Berry stays in Kansas City on a new deal, safeties like George Iloka should shoot to the top of most free agent boards -- including the Detroit Lions.
Per the Detroit Free Press, Iloka is expected to draw some heavy interest from the Lions in free agency. The 25-year-old was a former fifth-round pick by the Bengals and might be too rich for short-pocketed Cincinnati once he hits the open market.
The Lions are attempting to get the upper hand in new general manager Bob Quinn's first free agency and that means spending on valuable, young talent while avoiding the risks that come with one-year Band-Aids.
Iloka had arguably his best season in terms of understanding the defense in 2015 despite missing four games, and as Gregg Rosenthal and Chris Wesseling noted in their Top 99 Free Agents list, he might just be tapping into his tool belt full of physical gifts. At 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, there's a lot to like.
The Lions had plenty of trouble at safety last season but found some stability after plugging Isa Abdul-Quddus into the starting lineup. Abdul-Quddus will hit the free agent market alongside James Ihedigbo, who, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, will not be on the team in 2016.
That leaves 30-year-old Glover Quin back there without much help.
