Report: Pat White works out with San Francisco 49ers

A strong workout at West Virginia's pro day put Pat White back on the NFL map. The result was a tryout with the San Francisco 49ers.

White took part in a workout Thursday at the 49ers' practice facility, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. The 49ers have a need at quarterback after trading Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. Colin Kaepernick and Scott Tolzien are the only quarterbacks currently under contract in San Francisco.

A reignited interest in White makes sense, given his skill set and the NFL's recent gravitation toward read-option attacks. White, 27, spent a month during the offseason working out with noted quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr.

A former second-round draft pick of the Dolphins, White hasn't been in the NFL since Miami cut him at the end of training camp in 2010. He threw for 6,049 yards and 56 touchdowns and rushed for 4,480 yards and 47 touchdowns in four years at West Virginia.

White doesn't have great arm strength or precision, making it unlikely he'd end up directly behind Kaepernick on the depth chart if he managed to catch on with the 49ers.

Still, landing with a quarterback guru like Jim Harbaugh would be a great turn of events for White, who must believe he never got a proper NFL audition in Miami.
