Based on reports following Monday's pro day, you could have sworn that Teddy Bridgewater was destined for the third round of the upcoming NFL draft instead of the first.
NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock said his pro-day performance was a red flag and average, at best. Fellow analyst Daniel Jeremiah said the Louisville QB had opened the door for Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel to overtake him on NFL draft boards. There were hearty discussions on throwing with and without a glove. A glove!
Despite the poor reviews, NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks said he still viewed Bridgewater as the draft's top QB. Apparently the Texans haven't dismissed Bridgewater, either.
Houston brass met with Bridgewater for roughly an hour Tuesday in a private setting, according to a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The team had both head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith on hand to watch the workout at Louisville's practice facility and it all seems to be part of the team's due diligence as it considers its options with the No. 1 overall pick.
In fact, it would have said more about the pro day if the team didn't meet with Bridgewater.
There were plenty of folks reading the tea leaves following the disappointing performance by Bridgewater in front of a ton of NFL personnel, but perhaps this latest report will help pump the brakes a bit on people dropping the quarterback in their mock drafts.
The Texans' decision-makers will head to Orlando on Wednesday to view another potential selection as UCF quarterback Blake Bortles holds his pro day, and the Houston contingent will continue on to other workouts as it searches for the perfect player to take atop this year's draft.
It's worth noting that Bridgewater met with the Vikings prior to his workout and had Jaguars coach Gus Bradley and Raiders coach Dennis Allenamong those in the crowd when he threw. There are plenty of teams that need help under center and even if the the Texans pass on Mayock's top-rated quarterback, it seems pretty certain that another team will have no issue taking him.
NFL Media analyst Charles Davis' latest mock draft does have the Texans bypassing a quarterback to grab defensive end Jadeveon Clowney while Bridgewater remains the first signal-caller off the board at No. 4 overall to the Browns.
