Report: Titans made offer to free agent Chris Canty

The Tennessee Titans are looking to add bodies to a defense that allowed more points than any team in football last season.

One early target in Tennessee is former New York Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty.

Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports the Titans made a contract offer to Canty following his visit this week, but the 30-year-old lineman will continue to explore his options. That's a sign the Titans didn't blow him away with their offer, but Canty also might be waiting to hear from the Kansas City Chiefs, who he met with on Monday, per Mike Garafolo of USA Today.

The Giants released Canty last week, ending his four-year run with the team on the heels of a three-sack outing in 2012. Canty previously spent four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and has experience playing in the 3-4 and 4-3.

The Titans were a mess on defense last season but did manage 39 sacks, tied for ninth-best in the NFL. Canty isn't going to heat-seek quarterbacks, but he might help improve a run defense that ranked 24th in the league.

Canty -- who can sign with a team immediately because he's a free agent -- is likely to find a new home soon.
