In a lost season for the Bills, at least one positive has emerged: Buffalo has found a quarterback in Tyrod Taylor.
It certainly sounds that way, at least, after coach Rex Ryan told reporters on Monday that the team is "pretty sure" who their passer will be next year, per Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News.
It's a clear vote of confidence for Taylor after Bills general manager Doug Whaley was less than enthusiastic in his endorsement of the quarterback's play last week.
"Let's put it this way," Whaley said, per TheMMQB.com. "He's shown us enough that we can obviously keep trying with him. But it won't preclude us from going out and protecting ourselves (in case) he's not."
We'd never put it past Ryan to get too cute with his quarterback situation, but he should listen to center Eric Wood, who went out of his way to call for more patience with Taylor, saying: "Stability year to year in an offense is really valuable. It would mean a lot to have that."
It also makes sense to stick with Taylor considering the less-than-stellar free-agent quarterback market teams face come March. Sam Bradford, Kirk Cousins and Brock Osweiler top the list, but it's possible all three are re-signed by their current teams.
With no Andrew Luck-type figure waiting in the draft, why not stick with Taylor -- under contract through next season -- and potentially figure out an extension when the time comes?
Besides, this year's Bills sport the best total offense (326.3 YPG) and scoring attack (24.4 PPG) of any team Ryan has ever coached. Play-caller Greg Roman has partnered well with Taylor, who brings juicy mobility and a live arm to an offense that could use a dose of surety under center.
The Bills have their share of problems this season, but the promising Taylor is nowhere near the top of that list.
