There won't be a homecoming between Ed Reed and the Baltimore Ravens. A reunion with Rex Ryan might be a different story.
Ryan danced around questions about the New York Jets' interest in Reed on Wednesday, one day after the veteran safety was released by the Houston Texans. Ryan did acknowledge that he and general manager John Idzik have discussed making a waiver claim on Reed.
Reed went unclaimed on waivers Wednesday. He can now sign with any team.
Asked if he'd like Reed in his secondary, Ryan replied (via the New York Daily News), "Absolutely yes. I would like him on the team." He quickly softened that statement by joking he'd like to sign Ray Lewis, too. Ryan was a longtime defensive coach in Baltimore, which included a three-season stint as the team's defensive coordinator before joining the Jets in 2009.
Veteran Jets beat guy Rich Cimini speculated that Ryan wants Reed, but Idzik doesn't. It makes sense. Ryan has fond memories of the incredible player Reed was back then. Idzik is in better position to see the limited player Reed is now.
