Rex Ryan says Tim Tebow looks 'outstanding' in first Jets drills

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan sounded impressed with Tim Tebow on Tuesday, one day after getting his first on-field look at the backup quarterback when the Jets held an offseason workout.

Appearing at a charity event in New Jersey, Ryan told ESPN New York that both Tebow and starter Mark Sanchez looked "outstanding" and "are in phenomenal shape."

And, for seemingly the 1,000th time this offseason, Ryan was asked about how the Jets plan to use Tebow.

Debate: 'Top 100' surprises

NFL Network began to unveil "The Top 100: Players of 2012" with Nos. 91-100. What's the biggest surprise? Let's debate! **More ...**

"I think with (offensive coordinator Tony Sparano's) background and everything else, he's got a great vision for Tim and what we want to do with him. I think it is exciting to have a young guy that has experience in the playoffs and is learning the system and I think is an excellent backup quarterback," Ryan said. "Like I've said before, this guy's an outstanding football player. We'll see what we can come up with.

"We're in the beginning stages, just some base offensive plays right now," Ryan said. "We're really not even throwing the ball. It's just getting that formation out, handing the ball off or whatever. That's really where we're at."

Ryan also acknowledged Tebow's recently announced spot at No. 95 on NFL Network's "The Top 100: Players of 2012."

"That's really saying something about the young man," Ryan said. "Everybody recognizes the competitiveness. The guy's a winner, no question. People get tired of me saying it, but how do you not describe this guy as a football player?

"That's what he is. He's got size, he's got strength, he's got speed and he can throw the football."
