The leaner Rex Ryan has been less bombastic these days, but that doesn't mean he has less faith in his New York Jets.
"I'll be honest with you: I'm not so sure there will be too many people that want to play us," Ryan said Thursday on WFAN-AM. "And that's the truth."
Ryan's defenses are annually tough to contend with. The question is whether the offense can do enough to help win games. To that end, the coach suggested second-year quarterback Geno Smith will be "hard to beat out" by new addition Michael Vick.
Entering his sixth season as the Jets' coach, Ryan said he doesn't make Super Bowl predications or guarantees anymore because they put too much pressure on his team. However, when pushed, he acknowledged that -- like every NFL team -- his goal is to make a playoff run.
"Of course. Absolutely," he said. "I know what our goal is and I believe we can reach it."
