New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski likely won't make his season debut against the New Orleans Saints.
NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Saturday night that Gronkowski has not gained clearance and is not likely to play in Week 6, according to a source informed of the situation.
Gronk consulted with Dr. James Andrews over the last five months on the status of his forearm. Andrews encouraged Gronkowski to sit this week, according to Breer. ProFootballTalk first reported the news.
This is the next phase of the Gronk saga. Two weeks ago, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Gronkowski's father had been vocal about keeping the tight end off the field until he's fully healthy. Andrews not giving clearance indicates the forearm just isn't ready.
Earlier in the week, Breer said the Patriots would put Gronk's status in Andrews' hands. It looks like, as Bill Belichick would say, Gronkowski will be inactive.
UPDATE: Patriots owner Robert Kraft joined ESPN New York radio Sunday morning and addressed Gronkowski's injury.
Kraft said, " ... our first concern is his health and safety and doing what's in his best interest long term. And he's the only one who can decide when he's ready to play and we're completely behind whatever his decision is. Obviously all of us would like him to come as soon as possible, but we're not going to let our short-term desire impede what's right for the long term."
