Robert Griffin III had to choose between the NFL and a shot at the Olympics.
Griffin was once the Big 12 Conference gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles at Baylor. His promise was obvious, but he gave it up to focus on football.
It wasn't easy for the Washington Redskins quarterback to ignore last week's U.S. Olympic Trials in track & field in Eugene, Ore. In another life, he would be there competing for a chance at the London Games.
"My dad was talking to me about it (Wednesday night) and he was saying that a lot of my peers, the guys that I beat growing up, are running at the trials," Griffin told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "And ... it does suck. I mean, that's the only way to say it. It sucks. But I'm definitely fortunate to be in the situation that I am, being in the NFL, being a franchise quarterback for a team with the opportunity to go out and do an infinite amount of things.
"If I wake up one day and it's 2016 and I say I want to go run the hurdles again," Griffin said with a smile, "I can do that."
This is probably news to Mike Shanahan, who'd be relieved to read the tweet RG3 sent Sunday evening: "Not gonna lie people..... Hurts that I wasn't in that Final for the 400 Meter Hurdles But the pain was relieved by 4 words HTTR!" (For the uninitiated, that's "Hail To The Redskins.")
