Robert Meachem is headed back to the Superdome.
The Saintsannounced Tuesday that they have signed the wide receiver to a one-year contract. ESPN's Bill Williamson was first to report the move.
Meachem had just 14 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns in his lone season with the San Diego Chargers, who paid $5 million to cut ties with the veteran wide receiver Saturday. His salary still counts for $6.875 million against the 2013 salary cap; the dead money of his contract will roll over to 2014.
Meachem was a consistent and productive player during his time with the Saints, compiling 129 catches for 1,980 yards and 20 touchdowns in his final three seasons before leaving for San Diego as a free agent in March 2012.
Meachem carved out a nice niche in the Saints' offense, but it remains to be seen if Kenny Stills and Nick Toon, who both flashed potential during the preseason, will get their chance to contribute. Joe Morgan's season-ending knee injury opened up a spot for Meachem, but nothing ever is guaranteed.
