Russell Wilson is slated to make his Pittsburgh Steelers preseason debut Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson is scheduled to play and get the start "if he doesn't have a setback" to the calf injury that popped up early in training camp.

The veteran quarterback sat out early camp practices and was held out of the preseason opener against the Houston Texans while dealing with a calf injury. The Steelers have slowly increased Wilson's participation, and having him play against Buffalo indicates that the team is confident in his recovery.

Wilson entered training camp as the clear favorite to win the opening-day starting gig over Justin Fields. However, the calf issue opened the door for Fields to show off his superior athletic talent. The fourth-year QB, however, had a fumbling issue with center Nate Herbig in last week's game, which Tomlin noted at the time "negated a lot of good things."

Tomlin noted Thursday that he wants to see the Steelers beating themselves less this week.

"This time round, I expect us to be much more efficient on possession-down play," the coach said, via ESPN's Brooke Pryor.

Tomlin added that the first-teamers are expected to play roughly four series versus Buffalo.
