All things considered, the Buffalo Bills have to be fairly thrilled to be 3-3.
Their season has been one of ghastly losses: 48-28 to the New York Jets in the opener, 52-28 to the New England Patriots in Week 4 and 45-3 to the San Francisco 49ers seven days after that.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has had his moments this season, but then again, it's always been that way. The former Harvard star can look like an All-Pro at times. The problem is those erratic stretches when his seven-year, $62 million contract looks like Bills management made a huge mistake.
"It has just been very inconsistent all year," Fitzpatrick said of the Bills' offense, via the team's official website. "A lot of that falls on me and my play. I did not and have not started the year the way I wanted to. I think starting out with the three-interception game, having another four-interception game -- there has to be a happy medium there in terms of not going out there and trying to throw touchdowns on every play, but not being too conservative."
Fitzpatrick has averaged less than five yards per completion in each of the last two weeks, a sign the Bills are reigning in their quarterback to avoid another calamitous turnover day.
It's not a bad idea either: With running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller healthy and available, the focus of the offense doesn't need to be on Fitzpatrick's unpredictable right arm.
