The Washington Redskins hope their retooled offense will receive more support from a defense that resembled a fiery car wreck one season ago.
Pass-rusher Ryan Kerrigan is taking it upon himself to turn around that troubled unit, which allowed a whopping 29.9 points per game in 2013, second worst in the league.
"I'm tired of being consistent ... I want to be consistently really, really good," Kerrigan told the team's official website this week. "I don't want to be just consistently average anymore. I want to be consistently good."
Kerrigan has generated 25 sacks over three seasons, with eight takedowns in 2011 followed by 8.5 in each of the past two years. To his credit, the outside linebacker "consistently" was disruptive, ranking fifth last season with 40 quarterback hurries, per Pro Football Focus.
Like our "Making the Leap"candidate Jabaal Sheard, Kerrigan is angling for a monster season off the edge. The problem we see is a Redskins defense hurting for depth and difference-makers around him.
Kerrigan said in March that he's 100 percent on the heels of January arthroscopic knee surgery. Paired with a healthy Brian Orakpo, the duo is being counted on to keep opponents off the field and improve a pass rush that generated just 36 sacks last season.
