Saints TE Shockey 'happy to be healthy' after hospitalization

METAIRIE, La. -- Jeremy Shockey declined to discuss Saturday what happened in the New Orleans Saints' weight room that led to his hospitalization on May 27.

"I'm not here to talk about what happened a couple of weeks ago. I'm here to talk about today and the upcoming season," Shockey said. "That was definitely over with a week ago. I'm just happy to be healthy for the most part."

Saturday marked the first time that Shockey had spoken to reporters since he was taken to the hospital.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Friday that Shockey was dehydrated and had low blood sugar when his muscles seized up in the weight room for about a minute, unsettling teammates and sending trainers scrambling to his aid.

Shockey was able to walk to an ambulance after the episode.

The tight end said he experienced something similar when he was hospitalized after passing out at a pool-side party in Las Vegas during the 2009 offseason, but he didn't want to discuss this latest incident in any detail.

"It's good to be back. God bless that everything came back good news (from the hospital) and (I can) put that behind me," Shockey said. "Now I can focus on getting in better shape, getting in football shape."

Shockey said back spasms that kept him out of the opening practice of minicamp Friday morning still bothered him when he returned for practices Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

"That's expected," Shockey said. "I really wasn't expecting to do much today, but I felt better. It's hard to just sit and watch my teammates practice. ... I did some things and I hope to keep continuing to work and getting back to 100 percent."
