The San Diego Chargers will honor the life of linebacker Junior Seau in a free public event on May 11 at Qualcomm Stadium, the team said Saturday.
Seau, synonymous with the team he led for 13 years, committed suicide Wednesday at his home near San Diego. He was 43.
The public tribute will include guest speakers who will share stories and memories of the homegrown superstar's impact on the community and others.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. local time. The parking lot will open at 2 p.m. and gates at 4:30 p.m.
Seau's unexpected death has opened a wider debate about the physical and mental health of former NFL players after they leave the game. It's not known if health issues, mental or physical, factored in Seau's suicide.
Seau played 20 years in the NFL, 13 of them in San Diego (1990 to 2002). He then played three seasons for the Miami Dolphins followed by four seasons for the New England Patriots, retiring after the 2009 season.
