San Francisco 49ers' Demarcus Dobbs arrested on 25th birthday

San Francisco 49ers special-teams ace Demarcus Dobbs was arrested Friday morning -- his 25th birthday -- after crashing his car in Santa Clara, Calif., and he will not travel to St. Louis for this week's game against the Rams.

The 49ers promoted linebacker Michael Wilhoite from the practice squad to the 53-man roster to replace Dobbs, a defensive tackle/tight end who's the only San Francisco player with a role on every special-teams unit.

No one was injured when Dobbs crashed his car at 3:45 a.m. California Highway Patrol Officer D.J. Sarabia told The Associated Press the second-year pro hit a chain-link fence and a bush with his car but didn't sustain any injuries.

"He was involved in a crash, and we suspect he was under the influence of alcohol," Sarabia told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "He was not injured, and he was also arrested for possession of marijuana."

The 49ers issued the following statement when asked about Dobbs' arrest: "The 49ers are aware of the recent matter involving Demarcus Dobbs. We are gathering the relevant facts as it pertains to this situation. We have been in contact with both Demarcus and the League office. He will not be making the trip to St. Louis, and we will reserve further comment at this time."
