The New Orleans Saints are zeroing in on a role for first-round offensive lineman Andrus Peat.
Coach Sean Payton told reporters on Saturday that the No. 13 overall pick out of Stanford has worked mostly at right tackle during the team's rookie minicamp. The massive 6-foot-7, 313-pound blocker has also seen snaps on the left side, but the takeaway is that Peat is being groomed to play on the edge.
The Saints, of course, need more immediate help at left guard next to bookend Terron Armstead. The plan could be to start Peat at right tackle and move veteran Zach Strief into the left guard spot left vacant by Ben Grubbs.
"If you look at the right side of the Saints' offensive line, Jahri Evans and Zach Strief are both in their 30s," NFL Media's Mike Mayock said during the draft. "Peat will help solidify the Saints' entire front. I really like his upside, but I thought there were some inconsistencies in his play."
Drawing comparisons to Andrew Whitworth, Peat's performance on Saturday led Payton to say that he's never seen a player with such huge legs show such agility, per Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune.
Wherever Peat lines up, his presence is a welcomed sight for a Saints team that wants to punish people with the run in 2015.
