Boston University's Center for Traumatic Encephalopathy has requested to research deceased former NFL linebacker Junior Seau's brain, according to Peter King of SI.com.
King has written extensively about the research being done in Boston on brain injuries and its connection to football players in the past. The same researchers examined former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson's brain after he killed himself. They found that he showed signs of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a disease of the brain found in people with a history of repetitive brain injuries.
Duerson requested that his brain be studied. It is unclear if Seau had the same wish or if his family will be open to allowing his brain to be researched.
UPDATE: King later clarified the situation regarding the school's interest in Seau's brain, stating that the institute "respectfully looks to examine every former player's brain."
