The Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins are two teams already looking for head coaches. Several others could join the fray once the season ends on Jan. 3.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport joined NFL Network's GameDay First on Sunday to discuss some of the potential candidates for the openings.
Rapoport broke down several lesser-known candidates:
Mike Shula: The Panthers' offensive coordinator has helped turn Cam Newton into an MVP candidate. Shula is currently coordinating one of the most sophisticated rushing attacks in the NFL. Give Don Shula's son credit for formulating his offense to best fit his personnel, not all coaches are so malleable. Shula also has experience as Alabama's head coach (2003-2006).
Anthony Lynn: The Bills running backs coach and assistant head coach to Rex Ryan, Lynn has been a longtime favorite of Ryan. "Very commanding, very charismatic, the kind of guy who can control a room," Rapoport said.
Tom Cable: Currently the Seahawks offensive line coach. "(He) really has become a confidant and trusted voice for players there. He has resurrected his career and a big-time possible head coaching candidate this year," Rapoport said.
GameDay First's Michael Robinson, a former Seahawks fullback, proceeded to fist pump at the mention of Cable's name. Yes, players love Cable. Whether owners can get over the incidents that occurred when he was the head coach in Oakland and sell the fan base on Cable the coach remains to be seen.
