Spears signs restricted free agent tender to stay with Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys signed restricted free agent defensive end Marcus Spears to his one-year tender offer on Tuesday, according to the team's official Web site.

The Cowboys extended Spears a second-round tender, worth $1.226 million for the 2010 season.

Teams had until April 15 to sign Spears to an offer sheet, but the Cowboys held the right of first refusal.

Spears, 27, took over a starting role in the Cowboys' 3-4 defense during his rookie season in 2005 and has started 71 games.

Linebacker Steve Octavien also signed his exclusive rights free-agent tender, according to the Cowboys.
