Zach Mettenberger wasn't on the market for long.
The enigmatic quarterback was claimed by the Steelers on Wednesday, the team announced. One day after being waived by the Chargers, the 6-foot-5 Mettenberger finds himself behind a fellow giant gunslinger, Ben Roethlisberger, and Landry Jones.
Mettenberger fills the void left by Bruce Gradkowski, who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Once seen as a "poor man's Tom Brady," the former Titans quarterback was cut by the team following mini camps in May after Tennessee signed Matt Cassel to back up Marcus Mariota. In 2015, Mettenberger took over for the injured Mariota on two occasions, finishing with a 60.8 completion percentage, 935 passing yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. Over his two years in Nashville, Mettenberger failed to win a single game.
Mettenberger couldn't outgun undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici for the third position on the Chargers' depth chart behind Philip Rivers and Kellen Clemens, but now finds himself on the roster of another AFC contender.
The question now is whether the once promising arm can stay there.
