The New Orleans Saints list the unproven Joe Morgan as starting wide receiver opposite Lance Moore, as Marques Colston remains on the active/physically unable to perform list with a foot injury. Morgan sustained an injury of his own and had to be helped off the field after Saturday's practice.
The Saints addressed the position Monday, signing former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Steve Breaston to a one-year contract, his agent told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The Boston Globe first reported the signing, while FoxSports.com added that the contract is for the veteran minimum.
Released by the Chiefs in February, Breaston drew early interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. Although he recently worked out for the Detroit Lions, the market has been quiet since a report in March suggested Breaston was considering Regenokine treatment in Germany to repair knee inflammation and early arthritic symptoms.
Breaston's knee must be showing signs of improvement, as he won Monday's tryout versus former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Laurent Robinson.
Breaston's role with the Saints depends not only on his knee holding up, but also on the health of Colston and Morgan and the development of young receivers such as Nick Toon and Kenny Stills. Unless Breaston shows a natural rapport with Drew Brees throughout August, there's no guarantee that Breaston will earn a spot on the final roster.
UPDATE: Morgan is seeking a second opinion on his knee injury, Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday, via The Times-Picayune. Payton, however, didn't disclose the severity of the injury.
