When the Chicago Bears hired Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator, a transition to a 3-4 defense came with the move. That requires different types of players throughout the defensive front seven, and the 2015 draft will be a significant step in the club's defensive overhaul.
A good place to start would be Florida State defensive lineman Mario Edwards, Jr., who the Bears brought to the team's facility for a pre-draft visit last week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Edwards' draft profile describes him as being "scheme versatile" and notes he is suited to play defensive end in a 3-4 defense. You can bet his ability to handle the gap-control demands of playing in the 3-4 was a big topic during his trip to Chicago. He has worked his way under 280 pounds, light compared to some 3-4 defensive ends, but has played closer to 300 in his college career and would have no problem adding some size if needed. NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah alluded to Edwards' versatility last week, but noted he's difficult to define as a prospect.
Edwards helped his draft stock significantly at Florida State's pro day, according to NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt.
The junior collected 11 tackles for loss last season for the Seminoles for a team-best 50 yards in losses. He is more than likely a second-day choice, and Chicago's second-day picks come at Nos. 39 (second round) and 71 (third round).
The former might be high enough to land him; the latter probably won't.
