There's no denying that Jameis Winston has a complicated legacy at Florida State.
He won both a Heisman Trophy and national title for the Seminoles and lost only one game during his tenure in Tallahassee before becoming the No. 1 overall pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those accomplishments are certainly marred by the off-the-field issues Winston was involved in during his collegiate career. The incidents ranged from the serious (an alleged sexual assault) to the childish (yelling expletives while standing on a table inside the FSU student union).
Legendary former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden doesn't sugarcoat much and said Tuesday that Winston did the school no favors when it came to his off-field behavior.
"I think it's a consensus among Florida State fans and boosters that he was an embarrassment, in a lot of ways, to the university," Bowden said on "The Paul Finebaum Show". "He won a lot of ball games and was probably one of the best football players that ever attended Florida State but he hurt himself off the field. The good news is he's young enough to get over that.
"... He just can't make those junior high school decisions he made when he was in college."
This isn't the first time that Bowden has criticized Winston. The former head coach himself has a complicated relationship with Seminoles fans after a messy exit to end his tenure at the school, but the remarks no doubt convey the feelings of some inside the fan base after two seasons with Winston leading the team.
