Clemson held it's pro day on Thursday, and a star-studded group of players were watched by a star-studded group of NFL men.
The workout took place outdoors on FieldTurf, and included 14 players. Here are the numbers for the draftable prospects:
» QB Deshaun Watson (6-2 1/2, 215) stood on all his numbers from the combine. His workout came with mixed reviews. Some who watched it in person that I talked to liked what they saw; others not as much.
» WR Mike Williams (6-3 5/8, 215) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 and 4.51 seconds -- under what many had anticipated. He had a good workout but suffered from a couple of drops. His size, athleticism and explosiveness reminds me of Keyshawn Johnson when he was coming out of USC.
» LB Ben Boulware (6-0 1/8, 232) ran the 40 in 4.89 and 4.85 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.40 seconds. He stood on the rest of his combine numbers.
» RB Wayne Gallman (6-0 1/2, 211) stood on all of his combine numbers with the exception of the 40 (4.56 and 4.57 seconds) and the vertical jump (30.5 inches).
Safety Jadar Johnson (6-0 3/4, 201) ran the 40 in 4.63 and 4.61 seconds, had a 33.5-inch vertical, a 10-foot-4 broad jump, a 4.34 short shuttle and a 6.90-second three-cone drill.
» TE Jordan Leggett (6-5 5/8, 260) ran the 40 in 4.79 and 4.75 seconds, had a 9-11 broad jump, a 4.49-second short shuttle, and a 7.24-second three-cone.
» WR Artavis Scott (5-10 1/4, 194) stood on all of his combine numbers with the exception of the 40, which he ran in 4.58 and 4.57 seconds.
» CB Cordrea Tankersley (6-0 5/8, 197) had a 30.5-inch vertical -- an inch higher than what he had in Indianapolis -- and stood on the rest of his combine numbers.
» DT Carlos Watkins (6-3 1/2, 313), who only lifted at the combine, ran the 40 in 5.08 and 5.06 seconds, had a 28-inch vertical and a 9-6 broad jump at the pro day.
Other notable pro days from Thursday
VANDERBILT
Bill Belichick skipped the Clemson pro day and opted instead for Vanderbilt's pro day. He was there along with representatives from 28 NFL teams, including three linebacker coaches. The 11 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.
» LB Zach Cunningham (6-3 5/8, 235) stood on his impressive combine numbers and only took part in position drills. He moved around very fluidly. He's an interesting player; some like him a lot, others not as much. He told me at the combine that he entered Vandy at 198 pounds.
» OT Will Holden (6-7 1/4, 313) stood on his combine numbers and did position work only.
» DL Adam Butler (6-3 7/8, 293) ran the 40 in 5.20 and 5.22 seconds, had a 28.5-inch vertical, an 8-5 broad jump, a 4.82-second short shuttle, a 7.50-second three-cone, and 23 bench lifts. Because defensive linemen are at a premium, he should be a priority free agent.
PENN STATE
Representatives from 23 NFL clubs, including Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, attended Penn State's indoors pro day on FieldTurf. Also in attendance to watch 11 players work out were wide receivers coaches Bobby Engram (Ravens), James Urban (Bengals), and Mike Groh (Eagles).
» WR Chris Godwin (6-1, 208), the focus of most of the attention, stood on all of his combine numbers but had an exceptional workout.
» DE Garrett Sickels (6-3 5/8, 252), down 9 pounds since the combine, ran the 40 in 4.78 seconds, had a 33-inch vertical, a 9-5 broad jump, and a 7.01-second three-cone. He stood on the rest of his combine numbers.
» Safety Malik Golden (6-0 1/4, 201) ran the 40 in 4.50 and 4.49 seconds, had a 35-inch vertical, a 10-5 broad jump, a 4.33-second short shuttle, a 7.06-second three-cone, and added 16 bench lifts. He should be a post-draft priority free agent.
ILLINOIS
Coach Lovie Smith hosted representatives from 27 teams, while 19 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.
» DT Chunky Clements (6-2 3/4, 299) stood on all of his combine numbers.
» LB Hardy Nickerson (5-11 1/2, 228) ran the 40 in 4.79 and 4.82 seconds, and the three-cone in 7.40 seconds. He's the son of the former Pro Bowl linebacker by the same name who now coaches under Smith at Illinois.
» DE Carroll Phillips (6-3 1/4, 234) stood on all of his combine numbers. He worked out as an outside linebacker and showed good quickness.
» Pass rusher Dawuane Smoot (6-3 3/8, 260) had a 27-inch vertical, 21 bench lifts, and stood on the rest of his combine numbers. He worked out at both outside linebacker and defensive end.
» QB Wes Lunt (6-4 1/4, 222) ran the 40 in 4.91 and 4.89 seconds, had a 29.5-inch vertical, a 9-1 broad jump, a 4.48-second short shuttle, and a 7.28-second three-cone. He's projected to be a priority free agent.
OREGON
Oregon only had one player invited to the combine, but it didn't stop 30 teams from sending representatives to watch 11 players, including a trio of tight ends, work out at the school's indoor facility on FieldTurf.
» TE Pharaoh Brown (6-5 3/8, 246) ran the 40 in 4.82 and 4.84 seconds, had an 8-7 broad jump, a 4.46-second short shuttle, a 7.24-second three-cone, and stood on the rest of his combine numbers. Brown was a really talented player before suffering a horrific leg injury in 2014 (he also had several off-field incidents); he was never the same since. Some team will take a chance on him, and it could pay off big if he returns to pre-injury form.
» TE Johnny Mundt (6-4 1/4, 243) ran the 40 in 4.73 and 4.75 seconds, had a 30-inch vertical, a 9-5 broad jump, a 4.24-second short shuttle, a 7.21-second three-cone, and 21 bench lifts. He's a free-agent projection.
» TE Evan Baylis (6-5 1/2, 244) ran the 40 in 4.87 and 4.86 seconds, had a 29-inch vertical, a 9-6 broad jump, a 4.39-second short shuttle, a 7.23-second three-cone, and added 17 bench lifts. Like Mundt, Baylis is a projected free agent.
» QB Dakota Prukop (6-1 1/4, 210) ran the 40 in 4.75 and 4.79 seconds, had a 10-1 broad jump, a 4.16-second short shuttle, and a 6.78-second three-cone. He'll be a post-draft free agent.
ARIZONA STATE
Representatives from 17 teams watched 16 players work out indoors on FieldTurf. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and three special teams coaches were among the NFL dignitaries in attendance.
» PK Zane Gonzalez (6-0 3/4, 202) stood on all of his combine numbers. He's a good kicker who should get drafted.
» Punter Matt Haack (6-0 1/2, 202) only ran the 40 (4.56 and 4.58 seconds). He's a free agent prospect.
» WR Tim White (5-9 3/4, 175) ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.52 seconds, had a 38.5-inch vertical, a 10-10 broad jump, a 4.44-second short shuttle, a 7.11-second three-cone, and 14 bench lifts. The former track athlete from Santa Clarita, Calif., had a good workout and caught the ball well. ASU head coach Todd Graham told scouts he believes White can play cornerback in the NFL; he might not be big enough.
VIRGINIA
Thirty teams sent representatives to work out 30 players indoors on FieldTurf. While no Virginia players were invited to the combine, two emerged from the pro day as potential free agent prospects.
» WR Keeon Johnson (6-2 3/8, 211) ran the 40 in 4.56 and 4.57 seconds, had a 35.5-second vertical, an 11-0 broad jump, a 4.34-second short shuttle, a 7.00-second three-cone, and added 25 strength lifts.
» OT Eric Smith (6-4 3/8, 312) ran just one 40 in 5.39 seconds, had a 23.5-inch vertical, an 8-4 broad jump, and added 24 lifts. Hamstring issues didn't allow him to run the shuttles or go through a workout.
WILLIAM & MARY
Representatives from 20 teams watched seven Tribe players and others from smaller area schools work out outdoors on FieldTurf.
» OT Jerry Ugokwe (6-7 3/8, 317) had a 5.09-second short shuttle, an 8.34-second three-cone, and stood on all of his other numbers from the combine. He has three team visits scheduled.
» Virginia Union RB Will Stanback (5-11 3/4, 205) ran the 40 in 4.54 and 4.56 seconds, had a 34-inch vertical, a 10-2 broad jump, a 4.59-second short shuttle, a 6.90-second three-cone, and added 23 bench lifts. He started his college career at Central Florida but was kicked off the team. The 49ers and Giants have worked him out privately.
ST. FRANCIS (PA.)
Representatives from 10 teams watched four players work out indoors on FieldTurf.
» Safety Lorenzo Jerome (5-9 7/8, 201) re-ran the 40 (4.62 and 4.64 seconds) but stood on all of his other combine numbers. He had run a 4.70-second 40 in Indianapolis earlier this month.
WASHBURN
Ten teams sent representatives to work out 28 players from nine different schools. Why Pittsburgh State as the site: The school was the only one in the area with an indoor facility (FieldTurf).
» Washburn LB Cody Heiman (6-1 3/8, 229) was the only NFL prospect to work out. He ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.63 seconds, had a 36 vertical, a 10-2 broad jump, a 4.21-second short shuttle, a 6.90-second three-cone, and added 31 bench lifts. Washburn worked out at both linebacker and fullback, and should a Day 3 draft pick.
