Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Akeem Spence arrested on drug charges

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Akeem Spence was arrested this week on a pair of drug charges after a traffic stop by the Alabama Highway Patrol.

The 22-year-old Spence was stopped by state troopers at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday on Alabama State Route 113 for traveling 100 mph in a 65 mph zone, according to a statement obtained by NFL Media from the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Upon approaching Spence's vehicle, troopers believed that illegal drugs might be present, the statement said. A law enforcement canine subsequently detected marijuana.

Spence was arrested and booked into the Escambia County Jail, where he later was released on a $3,000 signature bond. He was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 3, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office told NFL Media on Wednesday.

Spence, a fourth-round draft pick in 2013, is coming off a rookie season in which he played all 16 regular-season games, logging 14 starts, one sack and 29 total tackles.
