The Houston Texans don't plan to throw fourth-round pick Tom Savage into the fire quickly. However, as he was the only quarterback at Day 1 of rookie minicamp, he got first crack at running the team's new offense.
"He went out there (Friday) and had a decent start to what hopefully is a long career for him," coach Bill O'Brien said, per the team's website.
The rookie NFL coach said his offensive system is "not the easiest to learn" for a rookie quarterback.
"We throw so many things at the quarterback when he comes in here, whether it's knowledge of defense -- even in the first night, we spend an hour and a half with the guy in individual meetings, and then expect him to go out there and execute at a high level," O'Brien said, per the Houston Chronicle. "It's hard to do. But that's our expectation level here for that position."
Savage will sit in a quarterback room with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates -- the latter two inherited by O'Brien's regime. (And you wonder why Andre Johnsonis upset.)
While we doubt Savage will show enough progress after his "decent" beginning to become the starter early in the season, the 24-year-old signal-caller isn't exactly battling any world-beaters for the job.
