If you want an idea of what kind of rivalry there is between Texas A&M and Texas Tech, look no further than a statue of Will Rodgers and his horse on the Texas Tech campus. As legend has it, the horse's rear end was strategically placed to point in the direction of College Station, home of the Aggies.
While the two saw plenty of words fly in both directions during the craze of college realignment and Texas A&M's departure to the SEC, it appears the two schools might be looking to renew one of the state's underrated rivalries.
Per the Austin American-Statesman's Kirk Bohls, Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt told him there is "mutual interest" in scheduling a football game in 2020 or beyond.
Count us in, especially if there's a slim chance Kevin Sumlin and Kliff Kingsbury are still coaching the teams. Given his connections to both coaches, maybe Johnny Manziel can be a part of the ceremonial coin toss.
The Aggies and Red Raiders have a rich history from their Southwestern Conference and, later, Big 12 days. The two have met 70 times on the football field with Texas A&M holding a slight edge in the series, including winning the last three games before they left for greener pastures in the SEC.
If any sort of game does end up happening down the road, you can probably bet there will be some interest from AT&T Stadium and NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant Stadium) in hosting, too. Either way, it will be a good thing for fans of the two teams and likely will garner interest from NFL scouts given the number of players each school has sent to the league.
The series would also help the Aggies meet a new SEC scheduling rule that requires them to play at least one "Power Five" conference team (from the Pac-12, Big 12, ACC or Big Ten) every season.
It seems too early to say that a rivalry game between the two foes will happen, but Hocutt's comments seem to be very encouraging.
If only those in charge at the University of Texas could take a few hints and start discussions with Texas A&M, maybe we could get a look at the rivalry we all want to see renewed. After all, it doesn't seem all that hard to put an in-state foe on the schedule.
