New York Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow isn't giving up on his designs to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, even with Gang Green.
"I'm working on a lot of things and feeling like I'm getting better," Tebow told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News on Thursday. "Looking forward to one day being able to show some of those things ... You never know for me. My role, it could expand."
Jones: Tim Tebow, unleashed?
Will Tim Tebow finally see extended action Sunday? Kimberly Jones writes the Jets are playing it close to the vest. **More ...**
Tebow has received more fanfare, positive and negative, than any "personal punt protector" in NFL history. Some in the media have called for Tebow to replace Jets starter Mark Sanchez, but he says the team traded for him to make Sanchez a better player.
"I feel like one of the reasons they brought me here was to help make him better by being someone that could come in and convert some first downs, make some plays, do different things," Tebow said. "So, hopefully our being together will benefit both of us."
Mehta wondered why Tebow hasn't endorsed Sanchez as the Jets' starter -- also mentioning his failure to do the same for Kyle Orton in Denver when "Start Tebow" billboards went up last year in that city.
"I think that was a totally different situation," Tebow said. "I obviously didn't have anything to do with the billboard when I was 100 percent behind our organization there in Denver and did whatever I could. That was a long time ago and something that I'm not worried about now ... I always said stuff for them. I believe I say very complimentary things about my teammates now, including Mark."
He also didn't sound offended at a recent Sports Illustrated poll of 180 NFL players that named him as the most overrated player in the league.
"I didn't see it. Yeah, it's really fine," Tebow said. "It's both sides, because they also voted me in the Top 100 (players on NFL Network), too."
Tebow fans upset about his lack of field time might have a chance to see him soon as a "Saturday Night Live" guest host.
"We've come close a few times," he said of the show that has a penchant for spoofing his Christian faith. "My schedule's been so busy. It would be fun to do it one day. The right day."
