Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence, the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed to NFL.com.
Downing was booked into the Williamson County (Tenn.) Jail and later posted bond.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Downing was observed on I-65 at around 2:30 a.m. local time driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed. A THP trooper conducted a traffic stop with Downing and observed signs of impairment and the smell of an intoxicant coming from inside his vehicle. Downing was then placed under arrest.
"We are aware of the reports regarding Todd Downing and are in the process of gathering additional information," the Titans said in a statement.
Titans coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Friday that he had been in contact with Downing, owner Amy Adams Strunk and general manager Jon Robinson and that the organization was taking the matter "very seriously."
"We all have a great responsibility as members of this community, as coaches and players of this organization, as fathers, husbands and teammates to make great decisions," Vrabel said, "and we understand that."
The NFL said it has been in contact with the Titans and will review the matter.
"All league and club personnel, including coaches, are subject to potential discipline when a violation is determined to have been committed," the league said in a statement.
Vrabel declined to comment on whether the team was considering its own discipline and said it would comply with whatever the league decides to do.
The Titans assistant's arrest came hours after Tennessee defeated the Packers, 27-17, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
Downing, 42, has been with the organization since 2019. He was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in 2021.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday sent a memo to all clubs threatening "significant discipline" for violating the league's longstanding policy prohibiting alcohol at team facilities and while traveling on team planes and buses, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report, per sources.
"In light of recent events, clubs are reminded that League policy prohibits alcoholic beverages, including beer, in the locker rooms, practice or office facilities, or while traveling on team buses or planes at any time during the preseason, regular season, or postseason. This applies to all players, coaches, club personnel, and guests traveling with your team," the memo read.
"This policy has been in place for many years. Making alcohol available at club facilities or while traveling creates significant and unnecessary risks to the League, its players, coaches and others. Violations of this important policy will be taken seriously and will result in significant discipline.
"Each club should ensure that its travel arrangements do not include providing alcohol service at any time and should also take appropriate steps to confirm that alcohol (whether beer or any other alcoholic beverage) is not available at its facility. Please direct all further questions on this subject to Management Council or Football Operations."
