CANTON, Ohio -- Tom Dempsey is remembered by old-schoolers for the mind-melting 63-yard field goal he booted on November 8, 1970. His kick helped the New Orleans Saints beat the Detroit Lions as time expired and stood alone as an NFL record for 28 years.
Dempsey was born with half a right foot, but managed to turn his disability into a strength. His shoe -- easily the most unusual in league history -- is on display at the Hall of Fame, along with his story.
Jason Elam tied Dempsey's mark with the Denver Broncos in 1998 and Sebastian Janikowski did the same with the Oakland Raiders last season. Someone's bound to crack a 64-yarder in time -- especially with SeaBass still active -- but something about Dempsey's footwork remains unique.
