Former Auburn cornerback Chris Davis couldn't be farther from his old school after signing with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted rookie, but the Tigers are doing whatever they can to keep his legacy on the Plains.
Enter Big Cat Weekend, where coach Gus Malzahn will recruit some of the South's elite prospects this week with every tool imaginable. That includes a chalk tracing of Davis' instant-classic 109-yard missed-field-goal return to win the Iron Bowl and move Auburn ahead of rival Alabama in the national championship hunt last November:
Picture Auburn's top recruits timing themselves to see who can follow the trace and reach the opposite end zone the fastest. Not a bad way to sway them, Gus. Just put 80,000 people in the house to cheer the contest, and they'll want to sign before they walk off the turf. Davis, even in San Diego as an otherwise anonymous rookie just trying to make a team, can't get away from questions about the historic play even six months later.
If it doesn't work out, he can always go back to Auburn.
His status there is forever cemented.
