James Franklin, Vanderbilt head coach

Jan. 11:Franklin officially named head coach at Penn State
Vanderbilt coach James Franklin was officially named Penn State's head coach Saturday, replacing Bill O'Brien, who left to become head coach of the Houston Texans after two seasons with the Nittany Lions. Franklin, 41, is a Pennsylvania native who guided Vanderbilt, long an SEC doormat, to consecutive nine-win seasons in 2012 and '13.

Lane Kiffin, former USC head coach

Jan. 11:Kiffin hired as Alabama's offensive coordinator
Kiffin, who was fired as head coach of USC in September, was hired as the Crimson Tide's next offensive coordinator. He replaces Doug Nussmeier, who earlier this week became Michigan's offensive coordinator. Kiffin's deal is for three years, according to a report on ESPN.com

Bobby Petrino, Louisville head coach

Jan. 9:Petrino introduced as Louisville head coach
Petrino signed a seven-year, $24.5 million deal with Louisville after leading Western Kentucky to an 8-4 record this season in his only year with the Hilltoppers. He replaces Charlie Strong, who left to become coach at Texas last week after guiding the Cardinals to 23 wins in the past two seasons.

Greg Roman, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator

Jan. 8:Report: Roman interviewed for Penn State job
Roman interviewed this week for Penn State's head coaching job, according to NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport. The 49ers play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Nittany Lions are looking to replace Bill O'Brien, who was hired as the Houston Texans coach last week.

Jan. 5:Mutual interest between Munchak and Penn State
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Penn State reached out through back channels last week to gauge Munchak's interest in leading his alma mater after Bill O'Brien departed to take over the Houston Texans. "Mike Munchak is already drawing interest from Penn State, a place he turned down last year for a job. Certainly a lot of mutual interest there," Rapoport said.

Jan. 5:Texas announces Strong as head coach
Texas confirmed reports, announcing Charlie Strong as its new head coach. Strong, who spent the past four seasons as Louisville's head coach, compiled a record of 35-17 with the Cardinals, notching two conference championships and a BCS bowl win.

Al Golden, Miami head coach

Jan. 5:Golden: I'm not a candidate for other positions
While he reportedly interviewed for the Penn State head-coaching job, Golden released a statement to affirm his commitment to Miami. "There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami," Golden said. "While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position."

Jan. 3:Malzahn on Browns opening: 'I'm happy at Auburn'
Malzahn quickly responded to a report that the Cleveland Browns were interested in pursuing him for their head coaching vacancy, saying, "I'm happy at Auburn. I think I've made that clear." The Browns fired head coach Rob Chudzinski last week. Malzahn has led Auburn to a 12-1 record and a berth in Monday's BCS championship game in his first season as Tigers head coach.

Jan. 3:Mora not interested in Texas job
Take Mora off the list of potential candidates for the Longhorns head coaching vacancy. One day after Texas reportedly reached out to him about the job, Mora pulled his name from the search. Mora signed a lucrative contract extension with UCLA last month and has indicated that he is perfectly happy to remain with the Bruins.

Jan. 2:Booster says Briles 'indicated' he would stay at Baylor
An influential Baylor booster says that Art Briles 'indicated' he would remain at the school. However, another report suggests that Briles would be open to listening to an offer from Texas.

Dec. 31:Briles: No calls yet from Redskins or Longhorns
Briles, who recently signed a long-term extension with Baylor, acknowledged that he's interested in how his spread offense would fare at the next level, but added that he would not pursue any opening and that he has not been contacted by the Redskins or the Texas Longhorns about their head coaching vacancies. Briles and Baylor will close out their season against UCF in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M head coach

Dec. 31:Report: Sumlin turning down all NFL interview requests
Sumlin turned down a chance to be USC's coach and has declined all interview requests for NFL coaching jobs, according to an ESPN report. Sumlin recently signed a six-year, $30 million contract with Texas A&M and appears content to stay with the Aggies. In six seasons as a head coach, at Houston and Texas A&M, Sumlin is 54-23, and he has had three seasons with at least 10 wins (2009 and '11 with Houston, last season with A&M).

Dec. 31:Fisher signs contract extension
Fisher signed a five-year contract extension Tuesday morning, various media outlets reported. His new deal reportedly will pay him $4.1 million per season. Fisher was in the second year of a five-year deal that paid him $2.75 million annually. He owns a 44-10 record in his four seasons as FSU's head coach, and the 13-0 Seminoles will play for the national title Jan. 6 against Auburn.

Dec. 31:Texas wants new coach by Jan. 15
Texas athletic director Steve Patterson said Monday night that he expects to have a new coach in place before the end of the recruiting dead period on Jan. 15. Patterson was making his first public comments about a new coach since the news conference announcing Mack Brown's retirement.

Dec. 30:Tedford could land with Bucs
Former California head coach Jeff Tedford is regarded as one of the best developers of quarterbacks in college football. That is the reputation Love Smith is counting on, as Smith is set to bring Tedford in as offensive coordinator should he be hired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Dec. 30:Stoops among NFL candidates
Add Stoops to the list of college coaches who could be candidates for the NFL coaching jobs that are now open in Detroit, Tampa, Houston, Washington, Minnesota and Cleveland, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. "Another name to watch, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. He also has expressed some interest in joining the NFL," Rapoport told Rich Eisen on NFL Network during coverage of the league's head-coach firings.

Dec. 30:Shaw doesn't plan to interview with any teams
Shaw said at a Rose Bowl media event that he plans to remain at the school. Shaw is a hot coaching commodity among college football and NFL teams. Shaw said he had not been contacted by anybody and also that "I have not and don't plan on interviewing with anybody."


Greg Schiano, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach

Dec. 29:Penn State poised to target Schiano if O'Brien departs
O'Brien has informed members of his staff to be prepared for a move to the Houston Texans, and the school's director of athletics, Dave Joyner, is preparing to counter the potential loss with a push for former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano, according to Rapoport. Schiano was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a 4-12 season.


Brian VanGorder, New York Jets linebackers coach

Dec. 29:VanGorder headed to Notre Dame
VanGorder is headed back to the college game, this time to become the new defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The move to South Bend will be VanGorder's eighth defensive coordinator position. He most recently served in that capacity at Auburn (2012) and with the Atlanta Falcons (2008-2011).

Clancy Pendergast, USC defensive coordinator

Dec. 26:Report: Pendergast not expected to return to USC
Pendergast is not expected to be retained by new head coach Steve Sarkisian and will draw interest from NFL teams, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Pendergast oversaw a remarkable turnaround this season for the Trojans by installing his aggressive 3-4 defense. Pendergast served as defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals before moving to the college ranks in 2010.

Charley Molnar, former Massachusetts head coach

Dec. 26:Molnar fired as UMass coach
Molnar, who was 2-22 in two seasons as the Minutemen coach, was fired, the school announced. Molnar won one game in each of his two seasons at UMass, which moved to the FBS ranks before the 2012 season. Molnar previously served as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame.
