INDIANAPOLIS -- Kenosha, Wisconsin is a somewhat nondescript small city along the shores of Lake Michigan that is notable to some for being a nice halfway pitstop when driving between Chicago and Milwaukee.
That's about to change in a few months, however, as one of the town's high schools will likely join an exclusive club by producing two first-round picks in the 2015 NFL Draft. Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon and Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes both attended Kenosha Bradford High School.
"We talk to each other pretty much every day. Even when we were training he would call me with pre-draft questions and stuff like that," said Waynes. "I think it's both really cool that we're both able to go through this together because instead of just pushing each other, we're helping each other, as well."
Waynes won the pair's only meeting on the field in Big Ten play back in 2012, but the two best friends are facing off once again in Indianapolis at the NFL Scouting Combine as each looks to convince NFL teams they're the one to spend a first-round pick on.
While they might be going head-to-head in that manner, the two are also keeping things friendly yet competitive as the combine rolls on and they hit the turf of Lucas Oil Stadium for all to see.
"There's always going to be competition: who runs the fastest 40, who benches the most, stuff like that," Waynes remarked. "At the same time we both want each other to succeed, as well."
NFL Media analysts typically have Waynes going ahead of the productive Gordon in mock drafts, but it won't be until April 30th -- at the earliest -- before the two will be able to celebrate their success and settle any friendly wagers.
