Vernon Davis: 49ers should be 2012 favorites

It's that time of year. Players say they should go to the Super Bowl. After the surprise teams that have made it lately, including last year's champion New York Giants, why shouldn't any decent team believe its next in line?

The San Francisco 49ers are getting a particularly large amount of hype. They have all the ingredients for media hype coming off a conference championship game loss and with plenty of young talent. Vernon Davislikes it all.

Debate: Most indispensable player

Which player means more to his team than anyone else? Our analysts debate, with Drew Brees getting plenty of attention. **More ...**

"I strongly believe we should be the Super Bowl favorites," Davis told Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News on Tuesday. "But I can't talk about it because it's all about work. It starts here at practice. I don't want to talk about it and brag and say this and that, because it's not about that. It's about working first. And in the end, you will see where you'll be."

Davis, who also opened up about his younger brother's murder arrest, has been dealing with a lot this offseason. But the memory of the team's loss to the Giants has fueled his focus.

"It broke my heart that we didn't get it. It really broke my heart," Davis said. "This team is ready. We smelled it, so we know what it's like. There's nothing like it. I've never experienced anything like that in my life."

We think the 49ers are setting themselves up for a fall this year. Expectations are higher, and teams find out every year you can't just pick right up where you left off.
