Former Texas quarterback Vince Young has been hired by the university to work as a development officer.
The school announced Thursday morning that Young, 31, whose magnificent title-game performance against USC led the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship, will work in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE). He will help raise money to support programs that address the educational challenges of first-generation college students and students from low-income backgrounds.
"Vince Young brought a national championship to Texas, returned to the Forty Acres to earn his degree and will now help other students reach their goals and change the world," Texas president Bill Powers said in a release announcing the hiring.
Young -- a Houston native who earned a Texas degree in applied learning and development in 2013 -- was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 draft, by the Tennessee Titans. He spent five mostly frustrating seasons with the Titans before spending the 2011 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in six games with the Eagles that season, seeing his final NFL action.
