The Houston Texansannounced Wednesday that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will take over as the interim coach until Gary Kubiak returns.
Kubiak, 52, collapsed on the field at halftime of Sunday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts and was taken to a hospital. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Kubiak suffered what doctors called a mini-stroke. He was released from the hospital Tuesday.
There is no time frame for Kubiak's return.
In the interim, it is not a surprise the Texans tabbed Phillips to take over the duties.
The son of Bum Phillips has nine seaons of head-coaching experience, with the Denver Broncos (1993-1994), Buffalo Bills (1998-2000) and Dallas Cowboys (2007-2010). He also was interim coach twice with the New Orleans Saints in 1985 and Atlanta Falcons in 2003. Phillips has logged a combined record of 82-61.
Phillips, known as a player's coach, has plenty of experience running clubs and probably shouldn't have any issues handling the head-coaching responsibilities.
Kubiak's absence will be felt more on the offensive side of the ball, where he called plays. Those duties likely will fall to offensive coordinator Rick Dennison.
