Robert Griffin III turned a solid outingSunday into another starting opportunity.
Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced Monday the plan is to start RGIIISaturday in a divisional matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, to be shown exclusively on NFL Network.
"He competed in the first half ... hopefully he can build on that," Gruden said.
Griffin finished 18-of-27 passing (66.7 percent) for 236 yards and a touchdown pass with no picks after taking over for Colt McCoy (neck) in Sunday's loss to the New York Giants. The quarterback ran for 46 yards on five carries but was also sacked seven times.
Gruden added that he doesn't expect McCoy to dress Saturday.
Griffin displayed more comfort running the offense than any time this season and flashed a bit of his formerly famed mobility -- including a would-be touchdown run that was overturned before halftime.
Gruden added that he will try to build the offense around Griffin's strengths.
"He's got every chance this week against the Philadelphia Eagles to take this position and run with it," the coach said.
A tumultuous season is coming to a close for the Redskins, but perhaps if Griffin stands out in the two final tussles the quarterback can add a silver lining heading into what could be another whirlwind offseason.
