Washington's Cyler Miles reinstated after 3-month suspension

Cyler Miles, who is in line to be Washington's starting quarterback, has been reinstated to the team, coach Chris Petersen announced Wednesday.

Miles and wide receiver Damore'ea Stringfellow -- a projected starter at wide receiver -- were suspended indefinitely in early February by Petersen for an unspecified violation of team rules. At the time, both were being investigated for their roles in a Feb. 2 fight.

In making the announcement that Miles would return, Petersen said Stringfellow -- who was charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of malicious mischief after two incidents Feb. 2 -- will transfer. While Miles was with Stringfellow on Feb. 2, prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to charge him.

Miles (6-foot-4, 213 pounds) was the backup to Keith Price in 2013, and with Price graduating, Miles -- who will be a sophomore in the fall -- is expected to start this fall, even though the suspension caused him to miss spring practice. Miles started one game in '13, against Oregon State, when Price was hurt, and threw for 162 yards and a touchdown in a 69-27 rout of the Beavers. Miles, from the Denver area, was a national top-125 player in the 2012 recruiting class and considered one of the top three dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation as a high school senior. His running ability is expected to add a different dimension to a Huskies offense that looks to be in flux.

Besides Price, the Huskies also lost leading receiver Kevin Smith, tailback Bishop Sankey and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins from last season's team. Sankey was the first running back taken in the draft, going to the Tennessee Titans in the second round. Seferian-Jenkins also was a second-round pick, by Tampa Bay.

Miles will battle Jeff Lindquist, Troy Williams and K.J. Carta-Samuels for the starting job. Carta-Samuels is a true freshman, while Lindquist and Williams are holdovers who haven't thrown a pass in a college game.
