Tom Brady has spent the last 15 years or so behind an impenetrable shield of his own Tom Brady-ness. You only see what he wants you to see, and that's not always easy to make sense of. Remember the mattress commercial?
Luckily we have Patriots tackle Sebastian Vollmer to serve as a kind of bouncer to get us on the other side of the velvet rope and into Club TB12. Back in November, we watched the Vollmer try his best to teach Rob Gronkowski the basics of the German language. Now Vollmer sits down with Brady, and the resulting footage shows the Patriots quarterback in as relaxed a state as you'll ever see him on camera.
At the 50-second mark, we get to see Brady's legendary competitive streak surface as Vollmer begins to lose faith in his teammate's ability to cobble together a decent German sentence. Later, Brady reveals his heritage ties to the Deutschland.
Wait, is Tom Brady kind of funny? MAYBE. Is this video a surprisingly vital document in deconstructing the iconography of one the most famous athletes of the 21st century? I THINK SO.
