Due $660,000 this offseason, T.Y. Hilton is one of the most underpaid players in football. It doesn't sound like the Colts are going to give him an extension before this season, and it doesn't sound like Hilton is thrilled.
"If they want to pay me, they'll pay me," Hilton said earlier this offseason.
After watching Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomassign their megadeals on Thursday, Hilton's mood seemed improved:
Hilton's size and overall production will prevent him from getting a $70 million contract like Bryant from the Colts, but Hilton's comparison is a reminder how tricky this negotiation will be. Hilton will surely want more than the $11 million-per-season that Mike Wallace gets, which could be tough for the Colts to manage while also looking to sign Andrew Luck next offseason. (Not to mention tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen.)
Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star said Hilton "very much had his heart" set on an extension this offseason. With that unlikely to happen, he could be ready to play hard ball next offseason. Don't be surprised if Hilton winds up getting the franchise tag, just like Bryant did this offseason. Then again, the Colts might have to save that tag for Andrew Luck. Hilton is the rare star player with a decent chance to actually hit free agency.
