2013 NFL last chances
You want a big whiff of mortality? When Citi Field hosted the MLB All-Star game earlier in July, I realized it might be the only time in my life I'll ever get to see my favorite team host the mid-summer classic. After all, the Mets last hosted in 1964, so if the current pattern holds, the next time they'll get the game I'll be 92. So with that in mind, as teams commence training camp, let's take a look at some of the things you may see in 2013 for the last time in the NFL.

Seriously, he's got one foot over the border already. The phone didn't ring all off-season and if you can't make it work in New England, the new Patron Saint of Last Stops in the NFL, then who's going to take a chance on you? It's nice Jerry Jones told Jason Garrett he's not on the hot seat. It's probably only because the games haven't started yet, but still. However make no mistake, if he doesn't win this season, he'll be out in Dallas and will never be a head coach again. If you can't win with the assemblage of talent he has on the Cowboys, his future ceiling in the league is as an offensive coordinator (See Turner, Norv). (AP Photo/James D Smith)

Seems like it's been years since I watched the hallowed ground outside of Katana and The Yardhouse in downtown Los Angeles get referred to as "the future home of football in L.A." Both factions pushing for teams (Billionaire Ed Roski and AEG) are close to pulling their support and if that happens? The NFL in Los Angeles won't - ever. A team isn't going to move unless they're guaranteed a stadium, and stadiums won't be built unless a team agrees to move. So you can see the conundrum.(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

Yes, the Jets will stink this season. Yes, it will be painful. But with money to spend in the winter of 2014, along with the base of a terrific young defense in the number one market in the league? Contention is only a quarterback away. And a wide receiver. Or two. Or three. But that's what free agency is for! (AP Photos/David Drapkin)

The window for number one overall picks closes eventually, and Bradford needs something to the tune of 30 TD and 4,200 yards passing if he's going to remain in St. Louis beyond 2013. He finally has weapons, but are they good enough for him to become a star? Another season of average production means he'll be on another roster, regardless of what his cap hit is to the Rams. It wasn't that long ago (two years) that pundits said things like "Josh Freeman may turn out to be the best QB of his class." Now, the future is waiting in the wings in Mike Glennon. Freeman has it all: a terrific set of WR's, a franchise RB and a re-made defensive secondary that will keep putting the football back in his hands. And if he doesn't break through? He'll find out what David Carr's football life is all about. (AP Photo/G. Newman Lowrance)

The sand will run through this hourglass rather quickly. E.J. Manuel is a double-edged sword: a QB of the future taken in the first round, which means the demand for him to play will be too great for him to sit behind Kolb in 2013. Barring Kolb turning into Dan Marino this summer, Kolb's NFL future will be that of a clipboard holder. But let's look at the positive: At least we'll be able to say "You can't get a better backup than Kevin Kolb!" (AP Photo/David Duprey)

Good luck Mike McCoy and Ken Whisenhunt! All you have to do is remind us that Rivers was once on the path to the Hall of Fame. The good news is that if anyone can fix Rivers, they can. San Diego also has a bunch of young playmakers to aid in this endeavor, so I like Rivers' chances. Now if McCoy and Whiesnhunt can fix Rivers AND Ryan Mathews? That's two miracles and they'd officially become canonized, which would be nice to have on a resume. "Says here you never won a Super Bowl but wow, a real life Saint? No fooling?" We've seen this movie too many times to not know how it's going to end. Just ask Michael Bush and Marcel Reece (and soon Latavius Murray). His only prescription for health is to be in a true committee with another RB whose playing time can slow down the wear and tear on McFadden, but that's not happening this season. We'll turn the page on him as a franchise RB after this season. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi)

It's been a nice run for Lauren thanks to 'Hard Knocks', but A.J. McCarron will be drafted this spring, which means he'll split all his screen time with Katherine Webb. Which means a backseat for The Lady Dolphin until she re-unites with Webb in two years for 'NFL Queen Quarterback Wives.' (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)
