Biggest defensive trades in recent NFL history
The Chicago Bears' recent blockbuster acquisition of Khalil Mack marks one of the most notable trades going into the 2018 season. Mack, who was traded following a contract dispute with the Raiders, is now the highest-paid defensive player in the National Football League based on the total and the average annual value of his contract. Take a look at the biggest defensive trades in the last 15 seasons. These trades involving elite defenders usually stem from contract disputes.

At 27 years old, Mack was traded by the Raiders to the Bears prior to the 2018 season. The Raiders receiver 1st & 6th-round picks in 2019, 1st & 3rd-round picks in 2020, while the Bears received Mack, 2nd-round pick in 2020, and a conditional 5th-round pick in 2020. The Bears signed Mack to a six-year, $141 million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL at the moment.

Revis was 27 years old when he was traded by the Jets to the Buccaneers prior to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Jets received the 13th overall pick in 2013 that they used on defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, and a 4th-round pick in 2014 that they used on wide receiver Jalen Saunders. The Buccaneers signed Revis to a six-year, $96 million contract that tied for the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL at that time. The trade stemmed from Revis and the Jets' inability to agree to a long-term deal prior to the trade, as well as Revis' ACL injury that resulted in him missing 14 games in 2012. Revis was released by the Buccaneers in 2014 and retired earlier this year after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Seymour was 29 years old when he was traded by the Patriots to the Raiders days before the 2009 season. The Patriots received the Raiders' 1st-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft that was 17th overall and used on tackle Nate Solder. The Raiders used the franchise tag on Seymour after the 2009 season. The trade occurred because Seymour was entering the final season of his contract with the Patriots. In addition, the Patriots' defense was undergoing transition (the team also lost Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, and Rodney Harrison that offseason).

Allen was 26 years old when he was traded by the Chiefs to the Vikings prior to the 2008 NFL Draft. The Chiefs received the Vikings' 1st-round pick, two 3rd-round picks, and swapped 6th-round picks in the trade. They used on of the 3rd-round picks on running back Jamaal Charles and traded up in the 1st-round for tackle Branden Albert. The Chiefs signed Allen to a six-year, $73.3 million contract that made him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL at the time. Allen was traded because the Chiefs had used the franchise tag on Allen that offseason and could not strike a long-term deal.

Abraham was 27 years old when he was traded by the Jets to the Falcons in a three-team trade involving the Denver Broncos prior to the 2006 NFL Draft. The Falcons traded the 15th overall pick for Abraham and the Broncos' 3rd-round pick in 2006 and 4th-round pick in 2007. The Jets received the 29th overall pick from the Broncos that they used on center Nick Mangold. The Broncos received the 15th overall pick from the Falcons, which they later traded up to draft quarter back Jay Cutler 11th overall. The trade occurred because the Jets had used the franchise tag on Abraham that offseason and had concerns about his fit as they transitioned to head coach Eric Mangini's 3-4 defense.
