Heisman winners and the Super Bowl
With a win in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton can accomplish something done only three times before -- win the Heisman Trophy, win a college national title, and win the Super Bowl. If Newton earns the league's MVP award (which is expected at the NFL Honors awards show on Saturday), and can emerge victorious in Super Bowl 50 and also earn game MVP honors, he will attain a quintuple of accomplishments only one other player in the history of the game has achieved.
On Sunday, Cam Newton will become the 13th Heisman Trophy winner to appear in a Super Bowl game. In total, 18 Heisman Trophy winners were on Super Bowl rosters.
Here's a breakdown of Heisman winners in the Super Bowl:

Heisman-winning season: 2010
College: Auburn
Game: Super Bowl 50
Newton has the opportunity to reach very exclusive company with a win in Super Bowl 50. Only Marcus Allen has won a Heisman Trophy, a national college football title, a Super Bowl, a Super Bowl MVP award, and the NFL MVP award (though, not in the same season as the Super Bowl). Only two other Heisman-winning quarterbacks have started and won a Super Bowl -- Roger Staubach with the Dallas Cowboys and Jim Plunkett with the Oakland/L.A. Raiders.

Heisman-winning season: 2004
College: USC
Game: Super Bowl XLIII
Leinart appeared in four games (no starts) during the 2008 season, during which the Cardinals advanced to Super Bowl XLIII, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Leinart was reduced to spectator in the Cardinals first Super Bowl appearance, because in the previous season Leinart lost the starting quarterback job to veteran Kurt Warner, who skillfully guided a second once-moribund NFL franchise to the game's grandest stage. Leinart started just two more games in his career after the Cardinals' Super Bowl appearance and was out of the game in 2013. Leinart is one of five Heisman winners who were on rosters of Super Bowl teams, but did not play in the Super Bowl game.

Heisman-winning season: 2000
College: Florida State
Game: Super Bowl XXXVIII
As a rookie in 2001, Weinke was at the helm of a 1-15 finish for the Panthers. Three seasons later, Weinke was buried on the depth chart behind starter Jake Delhomme and veteran Rodney Peete as the Panthers advanced to the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the New England Patriots.

Heisman-winning season: 1997
College: Michigan
Games: Super Bowl XXXVII and Super Bowl XLV
Woodson had an interception in the Raiders' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII. Eight years later, Woodson returned to the Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, but was forced out of the game with a broken collarbone late in the first half. Woodson had to watch from the sidelines in the second half of the Packers' 31-25 defeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Along with Tony Dorsett and Marcus Allen, Woodson is one of three players to win the Heisman, a college national championship and a Super Bowl.

Heisman-winning season: 1987
College: Notre Dame
Game: Super Bowl XXXVII
Brown was in his 15th NFL season by the time the Raiders advanced to Super Bowl XXXVII, where they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 48-21. With future Pro Football Hall of Famers Brown and Jerry Rice in his aerial arsenal, Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon had a career year in 2002, earning league MVP honors. However, the Raiders' offensive machine grounded to a halt against the Buccaneers, and Brown had just one catch for nine yards in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Heisman-winning season: 1999
College: Wisconsin
Game: Super Bowl XXXV
Dayne was a rookie when the New York Giants advanced to Super Bowl XXXV, where the team was humiliated by the Baltimore Ravens, 34-7. Dayne teamed with Tiki Barber to form a tandem known as "Thunder and Lightning." Barber rushed for 1,006 yards and Dayne for 770 yards in the 2000 season. However, in that Super Bowl rout, Dayne was a non-factor, getting no carries after having 17 and 10 carries in the Giants' divisional and NFC championship wins.

Heisman-winning season: 1995
College: Ohio State
Game: Super Bowl XXXIV
With a hefty assist from the workhorse running back, the Titans advanced to the first Super Bowl in franchise history (dating back to when the team was the Houston Oilers). George scored two touchdowns in the Titans' 23-16 loss to the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl. George and Marcus Allen are the only non-quarterback Heisman winners to account for multiple touchdowns in a Super Bowl game.

Heisman-winning season: 1991
College: Michigan
Game: Super Bowl XXXI
After four disappointing seasons in the NFL, Howard joined the Packers in 1996 and emerged as the league's most dangerous return specialist. Those skills came alive in a 35-21 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI. A 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown cemented the Packers' first NFL championship in 29 years. Howard joined Marcus Allen, Jim Plunkett and Roger Staubach as Heisman winners who were also Super Bowl MVPs.

Heisman-winning season: 1980
College: South Carolina
Game: Super Bowl XII
Rogers was in the final season of a seven-year NFL career when the Redskins reached Super Bowl XXII. He had five carries for 17 yards in the Redskins' 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos. Rogers was the NFL's leading rusher as a rookie with the New Orleans Saints in 1981 (1,674 yards), and then led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns with the Redskins in 1986. He retired following the Redskins' Super Bowl XXII win, citing nagging injuries.

Allen has the unique distinction as the only player in history to win the Heisman Trophy, a national college title, the NFL MVP, the Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP honors. In the 1983 playoffs, Allen rushed for 121 yards in a divisional playoff win over the Steelers, 154 yards in the AFC championship win over the Seahawks, and a then-Super Bowl record 191 yards rushing against the Redskins. Allen's 74-yard change-of-direction touchdown run capped a thorough 38-9 win for the Raiders over the defending Super Bowl champions.

College: Ohio State
Game: Super Bowl XVI
The only two-time Heisman Trophy winner didn't enjoy the same kind of success in the NFL as he had in college, playing seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. By the time the Bengals reached Super Bowl XVI, Griffin was reduced to a reserve role. He had one carry for four yards in the Bengals' 26-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. A year later, he was out of the league

Plunkett -- who was the first overall selection in the 1971 NFL Draft by Patriots -- did not live up to expectations in his first few NFL seasons. He was on his third NFL team and a backup when pressed into action for the Raiders' run to Super Bowl glory in 1980. Plunkett earned Super Bowl MVP honors in the Raiders' 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. Three years later, Plunkett had the Raiders back in the Super Bowl, this time upsetting the heavily favored Washington Redskins, 28-9.

Heisman-winning season: 1976
College: Pittsburgh
Games: Super Bowls XII and XIII
The Cowboys made an aggressive move to trade up into the No. 2 overall spot in the 1977 NFL Draft in order to get Dorsett. The move paid off. Dorsett rushed for 1,007 yards (in a 14-game season) in 1977. In the playoffs, Dorsett scored four touchdowns in three playoff games -- including a score in Super Bowl XII -- as the Cowboys hammered the Denver Broncos, 27-10, to earn the franchise's second Super Bowl crown. A year later, Dorsett rushed for 1,325 yards and the Cowboys were back in the Super Bowl, but this time losing in one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Staubach was a backup to quarterback Craig Morton for the team's run to Super Bowl V, where it lost to the Baltimore Colts. The next season, Staubach was elevated to starter and the Cowboys went on to the first of two Super Bowl wins in six seasons with Staubach under center. In all, Staubach directed Dallas to four Super Bowls in the 1970s, and emerged as the frontman for a Cowboys team that earned the moniker "America's Team" in the 1970s.

Heisman-winning season: 1964

Game: Super Bowl IV
Huarte was brought in midseason by the Chiefs in the team's 1969 Super Bowl-winning season after injuries to quarterbacks Len Dawson and Jacky Lee. However, Huarte wasn't pressed into action that season. However, Huarte's less-heralded college teammate at Notre Dame -- linebacker Jim Lynch -- played a vital role in the Chiefs' run toward Super Bowl glory that 1969 season.

Cannon is famous in LSU lore for a punt return touchdown against Ole Miss that helped him win the Heisman Trophy. Eight years later, the college running back made an appearance in the second Super Bowl as a tight end for the Oakland Raiders. Cannon caught two passes for 25 yards in the Raiders' 33-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Garrett was a rookie when the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to take on the mighty Green Bay Packers in the inaugural Super Bowl. Playing in his college stadium -- the L.A. Coliseum -- Garrett posted meager numbers in the game. Three years later, the Chiefs were back in the Super Bowl, this time they would emerge victorious in an upset of the Minnesota Vikings. Garrett scored the first touchdown of the game -- 65 toss power trap! -- in the 23-7 win.

Hornung (second from left) was reduced to being a spectator in the very first Super Bowl -- then known as the First AFL-NFL World Championship Game -- due to a neck injury. Hornung played in nine games in that 1966 season -- his last in the NFL -- scoring five total touchdowns in what would be the Packers' fourth championship season in six years. On the night before Super Bowl I, Hornung was invited to be a part of teammate Max McGee's legendary night out on the town, but declined the invitation. Hornung suited up for Super Bowl I, but was the only player on the roster to not appear in the 35-10 drubbing of the Kansas City Chiefs.
