Jason Pierre-Paul vs. Reggie White
Chris Canty recently said Jason Pierre-Paul was the best in the game and compared him favorably to Hall of Famer Reggie White. Normally, I'd squash such hyperbole, but perhaps the only fair thing to do would be to break this down in the grid.
So with the help of some photographic evidence, here is a comparison between the two.
And without further ado:
Pierre-Paul stands 6-foot-5 and he is just starting to fill-out his frame. His height makes him a menace in the pass rush, and he is starting to develop into a great run stopper, too.
White also was a tall defensive end, he too measured 6-foot-5. Advantage: Push.
Great nicknames have become a thing of the past in the NFL, much like leather helmets. There are so many different ways you could go with Pierre-Paul, even going back to his college nickname, the "Haitian Sensation." Instead we get the lazy "JPP."
This is a cool nickname. This is the stuff we should be aspiring to be. Advantage: Reggie White
Pierre-Paul was an All-American and All-Big East performer at South Florida. The Giants recognized this potential and made him the No. 15 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
White went to Tennessee where he set school records for most sacks in a career, season and game. He then was a standout performer in the USFL, playing for the Memphis Showboats. Advantage: Reggie White
Pierre-Paul had flashes in his rookie season, but he took a big step in his second season (2011), recording 16.5 sacks.
White had a head start to his NFL career playing in the USFL. He went for 18 sacks in year two, so we'll have to grade this on a scale. Advantage: Push
White made the second of his 13 Pro Bowl appearances following his second season in the NFL.
Pierre-Paul was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 2011 season. But thanks to the Pro Bowl now being played before the Super Bowl, we can understand why he was a little bit busy during that week. Advantage: Jason Pierre-Paul
White recorded four sacks in a game twice in his second season -- once against the St. Louis Cardinals and the other against the Los Angeles Raiders.
The Giants defensive end seemingly saved the team's season when he blocked Dan Bailey's kick in the Giants' 37-34 victory in Week 14. Advantage: Jason Pierre-Paul
White's Eagles finished the year with a dismal 5-10-1 record. The Eagles wouldn't make the playoffs until 1988 where they would lose to the Bears in the Fog Bowl.
The Giants went on to defeat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Advantage: Jason Pierre-Paul
His monster season led Pierre-Paul to be voted by his peers as the No. 24 player in the NFL Network's "The Top 100: Players of 2012."
White ranked No. 7 in NFL Network's list of top 100 players of all time. Advantage: Reggie White. So Pierre-Paul had the better sophomore season, but he still has a long way to go to match the White's career numbers.
