Mind-blowing stats for the 2017 Combine

Since 2004, 37 Combine QBs have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. What does the average first rounder look like? He is 6-4", 230 lbs, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.74 seconds - in other words, Andrew Luck (6-4", 234 lbs, 4.67 second 40-yard dash in 2012). For reference, prospective 2017 1st rounder Deshaun Watson is listed as 6-2", 210 lbs on the Clemson website. Mitch Trubisky is listed as 6-3", 220 lbs on the North Carolina website. DeShone Kizer is listed as 6-4", 230 lbs on the Notre Dame website.

Michigan had 14 players invited to the 2017 Combine, tying the record (since 2003) for the most invites for a school in a single year. It also represents a 600 percent increase from the 2016 Combine, when Michigan had only 2 players invited.

In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott in the 1st round and Dak Prescott in the 4th round. Both Elliott and Prescott shined at the 2016 Scouting Combine. Elliott led the NFL in rushing yards (1,631) this season and Prescott had the best TD- INT ratio (23-4) for a rookie QB in NFL history.

Since 2003, 19 running backs have run the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds-or-faster. Of those, 7 have recorded at least one 1,000- yard rushing season (Chris Johnson, Darren McFadden, C.J. Spiller, Jamaal Charles, Maurice Jones-Drew, Lamar Miller, and Joseph Addai). In that same span, 55 running backs have run the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds-or-slower. Of those, zero have recorded at least one 1,000-yard rushing season.

66 players from the SEC were invited to the 2017 Combine, the most of any conference. Of the 330 players invited, 20 percent are from SEC schools. The conference with the second most players invited to the 2017 combine is the ACC with 60 players.

Since 2006, on average, the first player selected that did not attend the Combine has been selected with the 94th pick in the Draft. In the 2016 Draft, there were 39 players picked (15.4% of the draft) who were not invited to the 2016 Combine. S Kevin Byard was the first player drafted (3rd round, 64th overall) who was not invited to the combine.

Since 2003, 53 wide receivers have run the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds-or-faster. Of those, 6 have recorded at least one 1,000-yard receiving season: Mike Wallace, DeSean Jackson, Lee Evans, Calvin Johnson, John Brown and Brandin Cooks. In that same span, 149 wide receivers have run the 40-yard dash in 4.60 seconds-or-slower. Of those, 8 have recorded a 1,000-yard receiving season: Anquan Boldin, Brandon Lloyd, Hakeem Nicks, Kendall Wright, Michael Clayton, Jarvis Landry, Allen Robinson, Kelvin Benjamin.

Although there has been more attention drawn to the Combine in recent years and players have begun training for the event to improve their workout times, the average 40-yard dash time has fluctuated throughout the last 10 years. The average 40-yard dash time of 4.81 in the 2016 combine was the slowest since 2012 (4.82).

From 2004-2009, 20+ quarterbacks were invited to the combine every year, but since 2010 the number of QBs invited has been below 20 every year (15 invited this year - tied for the fewest since 2004).
