The Chiefs have not won a game started by a QB they drafted since Week 1, 1987 when the Chiefs defeated the Chargers 20-13 led by Todd Blackledge. Blackledge was a first round draft pick of the Chiefs in 1983. The drought is the longest of the Common Draft era (since 1967), at 25+ years. The next longest drought was by the Redskins, who went without a win from a drafted QB from the start of the 1967 season through November 1985 (Jay Schroeder). The Chiefs have drafted 11 QBs since 1987. Of the 11, only Brodie Croyle (0-10) and Doug Hudson (0-1) started games with the Chiefs.

From 1988 until 2000, a former 49er quarterback started a game for the Chiefs in 12 of 13 years. Blame David Krieg, who started all 16 games for the Chiefs in 1992. Steve DeBerg, Joe Montana, Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac all started games for the 49ers before doing so for the Chiefs. All five quarterbacks also started a playoff game while with the Chiefs.
