Mind-blowing stats for Week 1 of 2013
Can Week 1 wins help predict the playoffs? Find out with these 10 mind-blowing stats for the 2013 kickoff.

In 2012, eight of the 12 teams that reached the playoffs won their season openers: Falcons, Ravens, Broncos, Texans, Vikings, Patriots, 49ers and Redskins. The 47 Super Bowl winners have gone 38-8-1 in season openers.

For 10 straight seasons (an NFL record), at least one team has finished in its division's first place just one season after finishing in last place. In 2012, the Washington Redskins finished 10-6 after going 5-11 in 2011.

Since the 12-team playoff format was adopted in 1990, every season at least four teams have made the playoffs that were not in the postseason the year before. In 2012, the new playoff teams were the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins.

Heading into the 2013 season, 14 teams are projected to start quarterbacks with two seasons or less of NFL experience -- the most since 1950.

Since becoming a starter in 2001, Tom Brady has had better statistics against the Buffalo Bills than any other AFC East divisional opponent. However, his two career losses to Buffalo both came on the road, and his only opening day loss was to the Bills in Buffalo (Sept. 7th, 2003).

Cam Newton is the first player in NFL history to record 20 rushing touchdowns and 40 passing touchdowns over a two-year span (22 rushing, 40 passing). Only two other players had even 15 rushing touchdowns and 30 passing TDs over a two-year span: Tobin Rote and Daunte Culpepper.

The New York Giants' magic number in 2012 was 21. When the Giants scored 21 or more points, they were 9-0. When the team failed to reach that mark, scoring 20 or fewer points, they were 0-7.

Peyton Manning would be the second-oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl if he hoists the Lombardi Trophy in New Jersey this February. The oldest QB? That's his boss, Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway, who won the second of back-to-back Super Bowls at age 38 before retiring.

In Chip Kelly's last season at Oregon, quarterback Marcus Mariota rushed the ball 106 times in 13 games, averaging 8.2 times per game. Michael Vick has rushed the ball at least eight times per game twice in his NFL career (with a minimum of six games played), and both times Vick led his team to a division title (2004, 2010).

Tony Gonzalez has a reception in 195 straight games, the longest active streak in the NFL. The last time Gonzalez was held without a catch was in Week 13 of the 2000 season. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Warren Moon, targeted Gonzalez five times but completed only 12 passes all day in a 17-16 loss to the San Diego Chargers. That game also wound up being the last NFL win for Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf.
