Tom Brady turns 40 today and is the oldest active quarterback in the NFL. He joins an elite club of players who continue playing in the league past 40-years-old. See how he stacks up against some of the greats.

Tom Brady will turn 40 years old on Thursday, August 3, 2017. He is currently the oldest active quarterback and the 5th-oldest active player in the league. The only players older are all punters and kickers - Adam Vinatieri (44), Phil Dawson (42), Matt Bryant (42), and Shane Lechler (40).

Brady will be chasing Brett Favre's single-season records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passer rating by a quarterback aged 40 or older. In his 2009 season with the Vikings, Favre threw for 4,202 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and had a 107.2 passer rating. Favre is the only qualifying QB to have a 100+ passer rating in his age 40 or older season. Last season, at age 39, Brady threw for 4,739 yards, 37 touchdowns, and had a passer rating of 112.2.

George Blanda is the oldest player to throw a pass in an NFL game. He was 48 years, 95 days old when he threw three passes against the Chiefs in 1975 as quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. To break this record, Brady will have to throw a pass on November 6, 2025 or later.

Brett Favre, Bruce Matthews, Warren Moon and Jerry Rice are the only four non-kickers to make the Pro Bowl at age 40 or above.

Steve DeBerg is the oldest quarterback to start an NFL game. He was 44 years, 279 days old when he started for the Falcons in a game against the Jets in 1998 . To break this record, Brady would have to start Week 1 of the 2022 season.

In NFL history, there have been only 13 quarterbacks who have started at least one game at 40-years-old or more. Among them are Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks Len Dawson, Warren Moon, Johnny Unitas, Brett Favre and Sonny Jurgensen.

Wide receiver Jerry Rice had a notable season after turning 40-years-old during 2002. Rice had 92 receptions for 1,211 yards and seven touchdowns that year.

Brett Favre, Matt Hasselbeck and Doug Flutie all had higher passer ratings after turning 40-years-old than they did prior. Will Brady be the same?
